The Premier Record of the Year: The Artist's Masterpiece Takes the Top Place.

On the surface, Lux may look closer to an arduous university quiz rather than a new pop project from an artist whose previous single featured a global pop icon. Broken across four distinct movements and voiced in 13 languages, this is a dizzying classical-tinged opus that delves into feminine mystery, spiritual ascent, and bodily change, frequently through the lens of various women saints. The end of a relationship—a topic handled with raw honesty elsewhere—soars heavenward on this record, supported by the lush presence of a major symphony orchestra and contributions from a Pulitzer-winning composer within an extensive list of contributors. The pure audacity by itself makes the work of other pop stars look quite laughable.

Rising Above Scholarly Pretense

The fact that this album succeeds in escape dry academic posturing feels almost a miracle, with sole praise going to Rosalía. While it's not the first time project to blend the past with the present, its ambitions are much higher on Lux, with the tightrope walk far more pronounced. What truly raises her fourth release, outside of its complex tunes, dense arrangements, and inherent theatricality, is a core sense of fun. Similar to the legendary artist at her height, there is a wondrous quality to the vocalist's singing that pulls the listener up in its tornado. When she's tearing hearts in two, the listener still desire to stay right there through the ride.

A Prime Example of Joy

This exuberant energy comes forth clearly during the stirring Italian ballad about Saint Clare. It luxuriates in a sorrowful whirlpool over several moments. Then, everything drops away, to reveal there's a spontaneous giggle followed by a comment prior to a hilariously exaggerated string surge thuds down with comedic impact. The track then shifts into the frenetic single driven by galloping strings, a powerful choir, and a surprise role from none other than Björk.

"The magic of Lux lies in the listener never exactly know—nor want to predict—what you will go next."

Nearly each song finishes in a completely distinct point than how it started. One moment examines the transient trappings of fame with a delicate orchestration only to collapsing in digital cacophony. Another, a song echoing her earlier rhythmic style starts off moody and brooding, featuring prowling beats, until fluttering traditional handclaps and a heavenly choir enter to soften the song's rough edges.

The Balance Between Art & Accessibility

A key balancing act on the album is straddling the gap between bold innovation and mainstream appeal. It is no coincidence that it has achieved her first release to break into the Top 5 of major charts: at its core a collection of truly catchy hits. A song sung entirely in the English language swells on a chorus that feels to collect more and more nagging melodies as it spirals skyward. That trick gets echoed by a different expansive ballad that grows and contracts, intertwining multiple tunes like a complex weave.

  • A waltz-like number seduces via its playful, theatrical drama and an anthemic chorus.
  • Lyrically, it shares the pop culture honesty of other breakup songs, lambasting an ex- partner described as an "emotional bully".
  • Across the album, the singing have a painted-on edge, akin to a fairy-tale character concealing a knife: "Gold medal in being a motherfucker / You have won the trophy of disappointment."

An Opulent Feast for the Soul

This album is popular music on a maximalist level, an ambitious grasp for capital-A artistry amid of impending AI-generated blankness. It rejects self-absorption in favor of glorious elevation, creating a dramatic spectacle that skillfully manages its built-in ridiculousness. It is an abundant source of hidden gems that requires patience to completely mine but never feels like a chore. Where other major releases of the year seemed like feasting on scraps, this record offers a sumptuous banquet at which the guests at it, some tipsy on sacred wine, flutter between conversations about historical figures, the profound feeling of soul-shattering sadness, and shared stories about useless men. It is a modern-day theatrical production from music's truly endlessly inventive practitioner.
