European Union Might Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Official Says
The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the United States on five Europeans working on fighting digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans targeted individuals who have been central to campaigns to enact laws governing American tech companies.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in condemning the move.
The restrictions were enacted this week against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance
The DSA is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, while European leaders argue the regulations are essential to combat hate speech and disinformation.
This disagreement risks becoming part of a far wider existing political and ideological clash between the current US administration and Europe.
