Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have joined forces with France's air force in a coordinated attack against an subterranean weapons facility in Syria used by the IS group, according to the UK Ministry of Defence.

The site, pinpointed through intelligence, was thought to be storing arms and explosives, the statement said, and was positioned in hills just above the ancient city of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"The RAF jets utilized Paveway IV guided bombs to strike a several entry passages providing entry to the depot... preliminary assessments are that the objective was successfully hit," the MoD said.

There was no evidence of any harm to civilians in the attack on Saturday evening and every plane involved made a safe return, the MoD added.

The British jets were supported by a Voyager tanker plane.

IS - referred to as Daesh - established extremist governance over large swathes of Iraq and Syria prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This operation demonstrates British leadership, and commitment to stand shoulder to shoulder with our partners, to stamp out any revival of the terrorist group and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the region," Britain's Defence Chief John Healey stated.

British military aircraft have carried out overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "deter any attempted resurgence" of the group after its military defeat at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I must thank the personnel of the UK armed forces who took part in this strike for their skill and their courage," he said. "They were part of numerous UK service members on duty over the festive period. This operation, to take out dangerous terrorists who threaten our way of life, shows how UK forces are prepared to act, all year round, ensuring Britain's security at home and powerful internationally."

During December, the United States armed forces carried out what it called a "large-scale strike" targeting IS targets in Syria, after an attack resulted in the deaths of two US troops and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The UN estimates IS still boasts roughly 5-7 thousand combatants in Iraq and Syria.
